On October 28, 2009, Cablevision erected a paywall on the Newsday website, telling readers that they will now need to pay $5 a week to read online if they are not already Optimum Online or Newsday subscribers. Resident Dan Richards of Bayshore said that having to pay to read online is not convenient for him, and that he will either read the hard copy or listen to the radio to get his news. Kevin Smith of Queens, however, said that he would pay to read online if it were a reasonable price.

Jimmy McMillan of the Rent is Too Damn High Party addresses the press about opinions that he is a one-issue candidate. McMillan contends that “the Rent is Too Damn High is like the body of a car, it’s the problem,” that he is the engine and that those people who are “out of business, going out of business, [or] lost [their] lease” are his fuel.

Jimmy McMillan, of the Rent is Too Damn High Party, explains the black gloves he wore during Monday evening’s governor’s debate at Hofstra University. McMillan, a Vietnam war veteran, was exposed to Agent Orange, which he believes is the reason he needs to wear gloves to keep from getting sick. When there is too much air conditioning, McMillan says, he needs to wear either gloves or a hat so that he will be able to breathe, but acknowledges that “it might be psychological.”
